Weather overview

Maluku lies in the heart of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where the climate remains warm year-round but shifts noticeably between wet and dry periods. From November to April, the region experiences its rainy season, with frequent downpours and high humidity. The heaviest rains typically fall in November and December, while January through March sees slightly lighter but still consistent precipitation.

The dry season in Maluku runs from June to September, offering a break from the rain and more comfortable conditions. May and October serve as transitional months, with rainfall tapering off or picking up gradually. Despite the seasonal changes, temperatures stay relatively stable, making Maluku a destination where warmth is a constant, even if the skies aren’t.

Temperature

Temperatures in Maluku hover in a narrow range, rarely straying far from the mid-20s °C. The warmest months are February through April, when daytime highs can reach 32–33 °C, while nights cool only slightly to around 23 °C. Even during the cooler dry season, from June to August, temperatures remain mild, with averages around 24–25 °C and lows dipping to 20–21 °C.

The slight drop in temperature during the dry months is subtle but noticeable, especially in the evenings. May and September mark the transition between seasons, with temperatures creeping back up toward the upper 20s °C. For travelers, this means Maluku is always warm, but the dry season offers a more comfortable heat compared to the muggy, rain-soaked months.

Precipitation

Rainfall defines the rhythm of life in Maluku, with a clear divide between wet and dry seasons. The wettest months—November, December, and March—see over 200 mm of rain each, often in heavy, short-lived bursts. October and April also bring significant rainfall, though slightly less intense than the peak months. During this time, roads and trails may become muddy, and outdoor plans might require flexibility.

The dry season, from June to September, is almost entirely rain-free, with July recording just 3.2 mm of precipitation. This period offers the most reliable conditions for travel, though the landscape may appear drier and less lush. May and October are shoulder months, where rain gradually decreases or returns, making them a quieter time to visit Maluku before or after the crowds.

What to pack

Packing for Maluku means preparing for warmth and rain, depending on the season. During the wet months, from November to April, lightweight, quick-drying clothing is essential, along with a compact rain jacket or umbrella. Waterproof footwear will help navigate muddy paths, and breathable fabrics will keep you comfortable in the humid air.

In the dry season, from June to September, lighter layers are still the way to go, but you can leave the rain gear behind. A hat and sunscreen are useful year-round, as the sun is strong even on overcast days. For evenings, a light sweater or long sleeves may be welcome, especially in June and July, when temperatures dip slightly. No matter when you visit, insect repellent is a smart addition to your bag.
