Weather overview

La Candelaria sits in the highlands of Colombia, where the weather stays mild year-round. Unlike many destinations with sharp seasonal shifts, La Candelaria offers a steady climate, though subtle changes in temperature and rainfall still shape the experience. The coolest months tend to be January and December, while March and April bring slightly warmer days.

Rainfall in La Candelaria follows a distinct pattern, with two drier periods and two wetter ones. The first dry stretch runs from January through February, while the second, shorter one occurs in July. The heaviest rains arrive in November, making it the wettest month of the year. Even during the wetter months, downpours are often brief, leaving plenty of time to explore.

Temperature

Temperatures in La Candelaria hover in a narrow range, rarely straying far from 14 °C on average. Daytime highs reach around 20 °C in January, February, and December, while nights can dip to 7–10 °C, especially in the early months of the year. The coolest nights occur in January, when lows average 7.3 °C, so a light jacket is useful after sunset.

The warmest days arrive in March and April, though the difference is modest—highs remain just above 20 °C. By June and July, daytime temperatures ease slightly, settling around 19 °C. Even in the cooler months, the lack of extreme heat makes La Candelaria comfortable for walking and outdoor activities year-round.

What to pack

Since La Candelaria stays cool year-round, layers are key. For visits between December and February, pack a light jacket or sweater for evenings, when temperatures can drop to 7–8 °C. During the day, a long-sleeve shirt or light fleece is usually enough, as highs reach 20 °C.

If you’re traveling during the wetter months—April, May, October, or November—a compact umbrella or waterproof jacket will come in handy. Footwear with good grip is also useful, as cobblestone streets can get slippery after rain. For the drier months like January or July, a hat and sunscreen are still a good idea, as the high-altitude sun can be strong even when it’s cool.
