Krasnaya Polyana

Forty kilometers from Sochi, the Caucasus Mountains rise abruptly, their peaks cutting into the sky. The Mzymta River carves through the valley, its sound filling the air. Winter turns the village into a base for skiers and snowboarders—Rosa Khutor, Gazprom, and Krasnaya Polyana resorts offer slopes for all levels, from wide beginner runs to steep, ungroomed terrain. When the snow disappears, the mountains shift: rafting on white water, hiking through alpine meadows, and cycling on rough paths.

The village dates to the 1850s, when settlers from central Russia and local Shapsug and Abazin communities built homes here. For decades, life depended on logging and hunting. In the 2000s, Krasnaya Polyana started changing, slowly becoming a destination for all seasons. Now, wooden houses stand next to modern hotels, and the streets carry a mix of languages—Russian, English, Arabic—though the pace stays slow.

Rosa Khutor has the most infrastructure: a thousand-meter vertical drop, a gondola to the top, and trails for beginners and experts. Gazprom’s slopes are long and wide, better for steady descents. Krasnaya Polyana’s freeride zones let skiers choose their own lines. In summer, the mountains stay active. Hiking routes reach Chernyaev Peak. The Mzymta’s rapids attract rafters. Nearby, Pslukh and Bezymyanny waterfalls drop down cliffs, and Lake Kardyvach mirrors the peaks.

You can also eat here. Aibga Café serves grilled lamb skewers and Adjarian khachapuri. Vershina Restaurant has trout from the mountain rivers. In the evenings, the Mzymta’s embankment fills with voices and the sound of the river. The House of Culture sometimes hosts folk performances—songs and dances from the region.

Krasnaya Polyana balances two things: modern infrastructure and wild nature. The Black Sea is an hour away but feels far, visible only from certain spots on clear days. The village doesn’t rush. Even in peak season, the mountains set the rhythm.
