Katumba Refugee Camp

Katumba isn’t a city in the way most people imagine one, though tens of thousands call it home. It sits in western Tanzania near the Burundian border. The camp began in the mid-1990s, when people fled war and violence across the frontier. What was meant to be temporary became permanent—an entire settlement shaped by necessity, where life follows its own quiet rhythms.

The streets here are narrow and dusty, lined with homes built from corrugated metal, plywood, and tarpaulin. At the camp’s center, small markets sell flour, secondhand clothes, and soap. Beyond the crowded lanes, families grow maize and beans in fields. Water comes from wells, and electricity is rare. The landscape shows survival, not comfort.

Yet life persists.

Children attend schools run by international aid groups, often in shaded tents. Adults work where they can—selling goods, repairing tools, or laboring on nearby farms. Medical clinics provide basic care, though serious illnesses require a journey to the nearest town. Neighbors share what they have, watch over each other’s children, and trade stories under the sky.

Katumba isn’t a place you visit for leisure. There are no hotels or guided tours. Instead, it’s a place where people, stripped of everything, still rebuild. For volunteers or researchers, it offers a glimpse into a world most travelers never see: one where dignity isn’t measured in possessions, but in the strength of ordinary lives.
