Weather overview

Гондэр sits at an elevation of over 2,000 meters, which keeps its climate mild year-round compared to much of Ethiopia. The city experiences two distinct seasons: a long dry period and a shorter rainy season. From October to April, the weather in Гондэре is mostly dry, with warm days and cool nights. The months of May through September bring heavier rainfall, transforming the landscape into lush greenery but also making some outdoor activities less predictable.

Travelers will find Гондэр most accessible during the dry months, when skies are clearer and roads are easier to navigate. The city’s historical sites, like the famous castles, are best explored in these conditions. However, even during the rainy season, Гондэр retains its charm, with fewer crowds and a more vibrant natural setting.

Temperature

Temperatures in Гондэре remain relatively stable, with daytime highs typically ranging between +22 °C and +31 °C throughout the year. The warmest months are March and April, when the mercury can reach +31 °C, while nights stay pleasantly cool at around +15 °C. Even in the cooler months, such as July and August, daytime temperatures rarely drop below +22 °C, though evenings can feel chilly at +13 °C.

The most comfortable months for exploring Гондэр are November through February, when temperatures hover around +20 °C to +28 °C during the day and dip to +12 °C to +14 °C at night. This period avoids both the peak heat of March and April and the heavier rains of June through September, making it ideal for sightseeing and outdoor walks.

What to pack

For a trip to Гондэр during the dry season (October to April), pack lightweight, breathable clothing for warm days, along with a light jacket or sweater for cooler evenings. A hat and sunscreen are useful year-round, as the high elevation means stronger sun exposure. Comfortable walking shoes are a must for exploring the city’s historical sites and uneven terrain.

If visiting Гондэр during the rainy season (May to September), bring a waterproof jacket or umbrella, as sudden downpours are common. Quick-drying clothing and sturdy, water-resistant footwear will help you stay comfortable. A light scarf or shawl can also be handy for cooler mornings and evenings, even in the wetter months.
