Gaza sits where the Mediterranean meets the edge of the Negev Desert, a narrow strip where saltwater meets dust. For thousands of years, it has been a crossroads—Philistine traders, pilgrims en route to Mecca, and armies marching with history’s tides. Alexander the Great passed through, as did the Crusaders. Their presence lingers in the layers of stone beneath the city.

The old quarter’s streets twist between pale limestone houses. At noon, the stone glows white; by evening, it softens to gold. Minarets rise above rooftops, their green domes catching the light. Spices, olive oil, and fresh bread scent the air from the markets. In the Zaytoun souk, vendors sell dates, handwoven fabrics, and coins unearthed from the earth.

The coastline stretches wide, its sand giving way to clear water. Fishermen leave at dawn in wooden boats and return by noon with sardines and shrimp, sold fresh along the waterfront. The sea was once Gaza’s connection to Mediterranean trade. Now, it feels like a quiet neighbor, the horizon dissolving into blue.

Universities and hospitals stand near narrow alleys where children play. Small cafés serve strong coffee to men in conversation. Daily life continues—families on rooftops at dusk, the smell of fresh bread, laughter in the streets.

Few travelers visit. Those who do remember it. Walk the corniche at sunset. Step into a mosque with cool stone floors. Try knafeh, its cheese melting under crisp pastry. Sit for tea. Listen. The stories you hear won’t be in guidebooks, but they’ll stay with you, sharp as the light on the water.
