Đakovo doesn’t reveal itself at first glance. It isn’t by the sea, framed by mountains, or crowded with festivals. Instead, it moves slowly—wide streets, low houses with terracotta roofs, and avenues where the midday sun barely touches the ground. The town carries history from the Austro-Hungarian Empire, when local nobility built estates here to escape the capital’s bustle.
The cathedral
The cathedral has long been the town’s center. It dominates the skyline, once the seat of a bishop. Construction took nearly 50 years, and the result is grand—neo-Gothic spires, frescoes, mosaics, and an organ that fills the space during holidays. Around it, a park unfolds where locals stroll in the evenings. The square feels lived-in, not just preserved.
Horses
Đakovo is home to one of Europe’s oldest stud farms, founded in the 19th century. The Lipizzaners, bred for the imperial court, are still raised here. Visitors can watch demonstrations or take a ride through the fields. For many, these horses are the reason to come.
The countryside around Đakovo is flat, perfect for cycling. Routes wind through fields, along rivers, and toward villages and vineyards. Local winemakers grow Graševina, a white wine cultivated here for generations. During harvest, family-run wineries offer tastings and stories about the craft. It’s a different side of Croatia, away from the coast.
Đakovo isn’t like other towns. No seaside promenades, no tourist traps. It’s for those who like quiet, history, and coffee under an old tree. The town doesn’t demand attention, but those who visit often return—to walk the same streets, listen to the cathedral bells, and feel the rhythm of life that hasn’t changed.
