Weather overview

Коломбо enjoys a tropical climate year-round, with warm temperatures and distinct wet and dry periods. The city’s weather is shaped by monsoon patterns, bringing heavy rains at certain times of the year while keeping the air humid and the skies partly cloudy for much of the time.

From January to March, Коломбо experiences its driest and sunniest months, with temperatures hovering around +27...+32 °C. This is often considered the best time to visit, as rainfall is minimal and the city feels more comfortable. By April, the weather begins to shift, with increasing humidity and the first signs of the upcoming monsoon.

The wettest months in Коломбо fall between May and November, with September and October seeing the highest rainfall—over 400 mm each. Despite the rain, the city remains warm, rarely dropping below +24 °C even at night.

Temperature

Temperatures in Коломбо stay consistently warm throughout the year, with little variation between seasons. The hottest months are March and April, when daytime highs can reach +32 °C, while nights remain mild at around +25...+26 °C. Even during the cooler months, such as December and January, the mercury rarely dips below +24 °C.

The ocean near Коломбо mirrors this warmth, with water temperatures ranging from +28 °C in January to +30 °C in April. This makes swimming and beach activities comfortable year-round, though the monsoon season can bring rougher seas. Humidity levels remain high, adding to the tropical feel, but the coastal breeze often provides some relief.

Travelers to Коломбо should prepare for heat and humidity, especially in the months leading up to the monsoon. Light, breathable clothing is essential, and indoor spaces with air conditioning offer a welcome respite from the midday sun.

What to pack

When visiting Коломбо during the dry season, from January to March, pack lightweight, breathable clothing to stay comfortable in the +27...+32 °C heat. A wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential for protection against the strong tropical sun. Since evenings can be warm, a light shawl or long-sleeve shirt may help with air-conditioned spaces.

For the rainy season, from May to November, waterproof footwear and a compact umbrella are must-haves. Quick-dry clothing and a waterproof bag for electronics will help you stay comfortable during sudden downpours. Despite the rain, temperatures remain warm, so avoid heavy fabrics that trap moisture.

Regardless of the season, Коломбо’s humidity means that breathable fabrics like cotton and linen are ideal. A reusable water bottle is useful for staying hydrated, and insect repellent can help ward off mosquitoes, which are more active during the wetter months.
