Antelias

Antelias is a quiet coastal town in Lebanon. Most travelers overlook it, rushing past on their way to Beirut or Byblos. There are no grand ruins here, no souks, no landmarks demanding attention. The town stretches along the Mediterranean, where low cliffs meet sandy beaches. The seaside promenade has cafés and family-run restaurants. The locals call it the town between the sea and the mountains. On clear days, the snow-capped peaks of the Lebanese range rise in the distance.

Life in Antelias moves with the tide. Mornings start with fishermen returning to the small harbor. Their boats carry the day’s catch, sold straight from the dock. By midday, students from nearby universities and office workers fill the town. They escape the capital’s chaos for lunch by the water. Evenings are for families strolling along the shore. Children play in the sand. The scent of grilled fish and spices drifts through the air.

The town exists for itself, not for visitors.

History hasn’t left much here. No ancient temples or medieval fortresses. But there are old villas from the early 20th century, when Lebanon was under French mandate. Their white facades have balconies and terracotta roofs. One villa, surrounded by palm and citrus trees, now belongs to the municipality. It hosts small exhibitions or concerts. Mostly, Antelias is a place to walk the promenade, buy baklava, or drink coffee under a plane tree.

The town’s connection to the mountains matters more than monuments. From here, it’s a short drive to the cedar forests of Bsharri or the ski slopes of Faraya. The surrounding hills hold hidden gorges and caves, like the one at Afqa. It’s known for its stalactites and underground river. Legends say the cave was once home to ancient deities. Today, hikers and visitors explore it. The real draw is the quiet beauty of the landscape. The sea and mountains meet just beyond the town’s edge.

Antelias is close to Beirut but feels like a secret. No luxury resorts or nightclubs exist here. Small guesthouses and family-run inns welcome visitors. The owners greet you like an old friend. The food is simple: classic Lebanese flavors and fresh seafood. You can walk along the shore or eat at a seaside table. It feels like belonging. That’s why you keep coming back.
