Algiers sits where the Mediterranean meets Africa, a city shaped by layers of time. It sprawls across hills like an amphitheater, its whitewashed houses cascading toward the bay, their glow soft against the blue of sea and sky. The city doesn’t demand attention; it simply exists.

The Kasbah, the old heart of Algiers, is a maze of narrow streets where time moves differently. Houses lean into one another, balconies nearly touch overhead, and slivers of sunlight slip through gaps to paint shifting patterns on stone. Getting lost here isn’t a mistake—it’s the point. Every turn reveals something unexpected: a door carved with geometric patterns, a hidden courtyard with a splashing fountain, a workshop where leather is tooled by hand or metal is hammered into shapes. The Kasbah is alive. Old men play dominoes on doorsteps, women balance baskets of fruit on their heads, children dart between arches with a ball. The past is lived here.

The colonial era left its mark in wide boulevards, grand squares, and buildings that stand alongside older structures. Place des Martyrs, once a market hub, now draws crowds of locals and visitors alike, its cafés spilling onto the pavement. From here, the port unfolds—a mix of cargo ships and fishing boats. Along the waterfront, the scent of coffee and mint tea drifts from open-air stalls. The colonial past is part of the city’s fabric.

Modern Algiers stretches beyond the old quarters, where neighborhoods like Hydra and El Biar rise with glass towers and restaurants serving lamb couscous or grilled sea bass. The city changes, but on its own terms. On the streets, Arabic, French, and Berber blend, while young people gather in parks or café terraces. Algiers holds onto its identity even as it grows.

At night, the city transforms. The port’s lights shimmer on the water, while lanterns cast a glow over the Kasbah’s walls and minarets. Restaurants pulse with live music—oud, jazz, traditional melodies—while families and couples stroll along the corniche. Algiers doesn’t roar. It breathes, steady and unhurried, like the waves lapping at the shore.
